Russia reveals commander of ‘West’ group of forces in Ukraine

The Russian Defence Ministry has revealed the name of the commander of the “West” group of forces deployed in Ukraine. It is led by Lieutenant General Andrey Sychevoy, the ministry’s daily bulletin says.

The ministry reported that Russian Defence Minister Sergey Shoigu had inspected the “West” group of forces and heard a report by its commander.

Shoigu then ordered to promptly destroy Ukrainian drones over the areas bordering Russia and prevent the attacks “on residential areas of the liberated localities”.

In its message, the Russian Defence Ministry also mentioned the names of three other commanders revealed earlier. The “South” group of forces is led by Sergey Surovikin, the “Centre” group is led by Aleksandr Lapin, and the “East” group is headed by Rustam Muradov.

Sychevoy previously served as commander of the 8th Combined Arms Army of the Southern Military District. On 28 February 2022, the EU introduced individual sanctions against Sychevoy.
