Moscow authorities have named the territory near the US Embassy in Russia “Donetsk People's Republic Square”, says the document published on the official website of Moscow, reports the Russian news agency Interfax.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin signed the decree. The territory is located in the centre of Moscow, near the New Arbat Avenue.
On 8 June, Moscow Mayor’s Office reported that as a result of the vote on the website Active Citizen, the name “Donetsk People's Republic Square” was chosen for the unnamed territories near the US Embassy. According to the website, 44,69% voted for that option. The same day, the Moscow City Duma deputies voted to rename the territory near the German Embassy in Moscow “Luhansk People's Republic Square”.
On 10 June, Chairman of the Russian State Duma International Affairs Committee Leonid Slutsky inaugurated the “DPR Square”.
Mediazone reported that Moscow public officials were ordered to vote for the new name. The vote started on 30 May.
